Berberine is an alkaloid found in the barks, leaves, twigs, rhizomes, roots, and/or stems of various plants, such as the barberry, Oregon grape, and tree turmeric. Traditionally, berberine has been used as an antimicrobial, antiprotozoal, and antidiarrheal agent in Ayurvedic medicine and traditional Chinese medicine. Berberine is a bitter-tasting and yellow-coloured chemical.

Main Function

Berberine is used for diabetes, high levels of cholesterol or other fats in the blood, and high blood pressure. It is also used for burns, canker sores, liver disease, and many other conditions.
·As a traditional medicine or dietary supplement, berberine has shown some activity against fungal infections, Candida albicans, yeast, parasites, and bacterial/viral infections.

Berberine is considered an antibiotic.
Berberine is a component of some eye drop formulations. [citation needed] There is some evidence it is useful in the treatment of trachoma, and it has been a standard treatment for leishmaniasis.
Berberine is a nucleic acid binding isoquinolone alkaloid with wide potential therapeutic properties.
